Today we recorded vocals for the second song (Untitled 2 BPM 193). We set up the Shure SM7B microphone as the main microphone with the AKG 314 placed above it and upside down in order to capture a fuller, denser sound.
We did two takes of the vocals, Alex was sounding really good. The song had a mix of screaming and clean singing, so in order to save his voice we took our time and did just clean parts of the song first. Screams can be recorded at the end when his voice is tired. We then further broke it down and did just a few passes at the verses and chorus. The song is really fast so it was nice to let him try the song in sections without having to lose his breath.
After each few takes we would get him back in to listen and we would discuss where we want the song to go. Very easy process and Alex was open to ideas.
Overdubs and harmonies were next, added a lot of colour and dynamics to the song. The harmonies sounded amazing, changed the vibe of the song competley. It will be interesting to see how it is mixed. We have plenty of vocal takes to go off and it could change the style of a song from punk to post hardcore or pop punk.
Thoughts and musings
Organisation is the key when it comes to vocals. Use protools playlists and record the takes which are the best. Having a team that knows what they are doing is essential. The desk, microphones and Pro Tools session can be set up quickly and things can get underway.
Once again amazing.
